That being said, there are some parts of Halloween that I enjoy.
Like candy.
Livers is doing her first trick-or-treat this year, and you better believe that Mama is going to tear into some Reese cups when she's asleep. (Don't worry, she'll get some, too. A 22-month-old can't eat a Snickers safely yet anyway.)
It's also fun to dress up. I myself will not be participating, but I will enjoy putting Livers in her cutie little costume. I had great plans of being frugal and creative by making her costume. She was going to be....a box of Mac-N-Cheese. I had everything planned and had gotten her arm and leg holes cut out last night. She even enjoyed walking around in her cute blue box. However, the idea went to pot when I put the last coat of spray paint on the box before detail painting and it bubbled really bad. Since sending my child out in a crappily constructed costume would look very badly upon her (and me), I sucked it up and found the CUTEST costume on discount today. Pictures will be forthcoming.
Also fun at Halloween: pumpkin carving.
I've had grand aspirations the past few years to carve a pumpkin for Halloween. The first year J and I were married, I'm sure I had an excuse (like being tired from work), but I don't remember it. The second Halloween in our marriage I was seven months pregnant, so I was A) tired, and B) had dinner plans and didn't get the chance to do it. The third year I waited until the day before Halloween to find a pumpkin and was out of luck.
This year I finally got it done.
I'm not one to just slap a simple face on a pumpkin and call it a night. I prefer something fancy, because it gives me a chance to let my creative hair down. The first pumpkin I ever carved was when I was in college. I was working a residence hall desk on Halloween, and the Resident Director didn't mind me carving the pumpkin that was there for decoration. Since I had to

I just had to try it, and after about an hour's work with actual decent knives, this is what I created:
Not half bad, considering the amount of experience I have in pumpkin carving. I'd love to learn to carve pumpkins where you use a relief effect, but that might be something for next year.
Oh, also fun with pumpkin carving: roasting pumpkin seeds. I forgot how yummy they can be!

I am a lover of Halloween! I ignore all negative undertones and just have fun with the dressing up and eating of candy! I mean taking the kids out trick and treating!
I have never attempted anything but a jack-o-lantern face. We did a bat one year, but I'm sure I was not the carver.... your owl is great!
And just cause I think it's funny the word verification is: sessesse !!
Have fun with Livers first TOT night. Personally I love Halloween and can't wait to hit the streets with the girls. Well, with one girl and her friends. The big one is going out on her own with a group of friends.
So enjoy these days because soon she will be a teenager and want to ditch you for her friends.
awesome - I dont do Halloween too much either - but my kids ADORE this holiday - so it sort of is like momma sucks it up for the kids!!!
That pumpkin looks awesome. Mine ended up looking like Charlie Brown's ghost costume. I had a little trouble with the knife.
Have a happy Halloween.
Your pumpkin owl is great! I have never carved a pumpkin in my life ever! Great job! My photoshoped photostory is on earthly explorations. Hope to see you there! Happy Halloween!
can't wait to see my girl in her costume! oh, and nice job on the pumpkin... now put the knife down because i tagged you on my blog, little missy. i expect you to play along!

happy halloween. and save some reese's cups for me.
Don't let Livers see you downing the reese cups!!! Can't wait to see pics!!!
And super great job on the pumpkin...every year I say I am going to do a really creative one. I don't. I just carved ours last night and even though it was plain jane, I had more fun with it then anyone else!
Awesome pumpkin!!! Or Jack-o-lantern...whatever.
Happy 'fun' Halloween!
Ooooooh, your pumpkin is super fancy! I love it!! GREAT pics!!
I am not a big Halloween fan, but having kids who are super enthused and a husband who might rival their enthusiasm, I like it more every year.
I am a Halloween lover in spirit. Meaning that I love the thrill of it, going to the corn mazes and pumpkin patches that other people put together and run. I love seeing all of the costumes. But, where I start losing my enthusiasm is when I realize at 3 p.m. ON HALLOWEEN that I haven't bought candy yet. And, then there's the whole thing with how much to buy. Too much... what to do with it? I don't like candy. Not enough? Feel like I am letting everyone down. And, if I get there too late all the good costumes are gone.
So... basically, this therapy comment teaches me that if I would stop procrastinating, I may learn to love ALL aspects of the holiday.
Hmmmm.... thanks for letting me use your couch LOL!
Happy Halloween!
Oh I just love it. You did a great job on it. Happy Halloween.
Very nice pumpkin carving. :)
I'm with you on the Halloween likes and dislikes. We went to our church's Reformation Night this evening, which was really just a dress up party for the children, with all the scary left out.
Good job! Nice hooter. :)
Wow great job!! I've never carved one lol. Knowing me I would probably carve a horse.
Cool pumpkin. When it comes to Halloween, I'm one foot in one foot out. I can't seem to get my pumpkin carving into gear.
Great Job!! I Love the owl pumpkin!
Can't wait to see Livers in her costume! And that pumpkin came out SO PERFECT!!
Im like you, but then when Im out with my kids I remeber what its all about( we dont trick or treat, but do hit the local fall fest!) My girls love it... And you got mad carving skilz_ also, vavavavooom, your a hot lil redhead, lol!! :) LA
I agree. All my life I've never done any of the scary stuff for Halloween. It's always been about dressing up like princesses, going to fall festivals or cute little parties and trick or treating for tons of candy. Now that I have little ones of my own, we do the same stuff I did as a child. It's fun and sweet and never scary.
I love your pumpkin--very creative. We just stuck with a plain pumpkin. No carving skills in our household. Oh well!
That pumpkin is awesome! I didn't even attempt to carve this year...that was Grandma and Grandpa's special project with the kids. You did great!
I'm playing catch up this morning and thought I'd stop in and say awesome skills girl! Those eyes had to be a pain in the rear! Kudos to you though!
